Has Corporate ESG Assessment or Disclosure

Commitment

The company behind the product participates in an organization-level ESG rating, validation, verification, or disclosure programme. The evidence strength varies sharply by programme: EcoVadis, CDP, and GRESB issue scores or grades; SBTi is a binary validation that climate targets meet its criteria; ISO 14064 and the CO2 Performance Ladder involve third-party verification or certification; GRI is a reporting format with no score or verification at all. None of these is evidence about a specific product or material.

You might see it written as: EcoVadis Rating · EcoVadis Medal · Science Based Targets · Science-Based Targets · Carbon Disclosure Project · CDP A List · Global Reporting Initiative · GRESB Assessment · CO2 Performance Ladder · corporate ESG rating · supplier sustainability rating · corporate sustainability disclosure

Speaks to: Climate health · Social equity

High greenwash risk

Often stated without the evidence to back it up — verify before specifying.

Evidence strength within this family is deliberately uneven: scored ratings (EcoVadis, CDP, GRESB) > binary validation (SBTi) > verified inventory or certified scheme (ISO 14064, CO2 Performance Ladder) >> unscored reporting format (GRI). Never present these as interchangeable.

All of these attach to a company or portfolio, never to a product — a corporate badge is context, not material evidence.

What backs it up

  • EcoVadis Rating

Must be at least: Programme operator

Check it states: Overall Score, Medal Level, Assessment Date, Rated Entity Scope

    Scorecards expire after 12 months.

Confirm the rated legal entity matches the manufacturer.

  • SBTi Target Validation

Must be at least: Official registry

Check it states: Company Name, Target Type, Target Year, Validation Status

Validation covers targets, not achieved reductions.

Distinguish 'committed' from 'targets set' — only validated targets count.

  • CDP Disclosure Score

Must be at least: Programme operator

Check it states: Company Name, Questionnaire Theme, Score Grade, Reporting Year

State the theme (climate, water, forests) and year — grades are theme- and year-specific.

A grade rewards disclosure and management quality, not low absolute emissions.

  • GRI Sustainability Report

Must be at least: Manufacturer declared

Check it states: Reporting Entity, Reporting Period, Gri Standards Edition, External Assurance Status

GRI is a reporting format, not a scored assessment — this is the weakest evidence tier in this family.

External assurance is optional and separate; note whether the report was assured.

  • GRESB Assessment

Must be at least: Programme operator

Check it states: Assessed Entity, Assessment Year, Gresb Score, Star Rating

Scores are peer-relative and refresh annually.

GRESB assesses real-estate and infrastructure portfolios — rarely relevant to a product manufacturer directly.

  • ISO 14064 GHG Inventory Verification

Must be at least: Third-party verified

Check it states: Reporting Period, Organizational Boundary, Verification Body, Assurance Level

Require the ISO 14064-3 verification statement — a 14064-1 inventory alone is self-prepared.

Verification covers the stated period and boundary only.

  • CO2 Performance Ladder Certificate

Must be at least: Third-party verified

Check it states: Ladder Level, Certificate Number, Certification Body, Valid Until

State the level (1–5) — only levels 4–5 address the value chain.

Primarily a Dutch/Belgian procurement scheme; check certificate currency.
